Our objectives (Mission): "the dynamics of networks".

Volens is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that has been established in Belgium since 1964. It is renowned for its work in development co-operation and international solidarity. Volens and its network of solidarity groups support the programmes and operations of some 300 local organisations in 25 countries across Africa, South America and Asia, all working towards the integration of excluded and marginalised groups and persons.

South
For many years, we have built specific partnerships with organisations in the South through an approach that focuses on the dynamics of networks. Together, five to eight local organisations identify a specific objective (according to their own pace and specific needs) which are relevant to the development of activities within an “interdependent economy” and the implementation of “appropriate training” programmes. By working around these themes, the local partner organisations benefit from collaborative learning (South-South), they reinforce and encourage one another and ensure that problems are treated at a regional level.

In the field, our energy is focused on the strengthening of capacities, reinforcement of organisations, education and training, networking and the safeguarding of the partner’s interests. We bring that extra touch needed to work in a sustainable and autonomous manner. To this end, Volens uses human resources, development workers, and encourages the exchange of expertise and experiences. We also establish contacts and help with the funding of projects. Every day we learn how to improve thanks to the connections we have with others.

North
In the north, Volens is a socially involved actor. Every day we are joined by people who are willing to try and make the world a better and fairer place. We achieve this through awareness raising and development education in Belgium. We encourage newcomers to participate in an existing network of citizens of the world.

Our actions can take many forms. We propose, for the youth, educational projects such as action-theatre; we can provide teachers and organisers with training in obtaining the skills and basic elements needed to take part in the North-South dialogue; the “SUDotheque” serves as an excellent platform for exchanging ideas and experiences; we have various materials and seminars available for various groups; we help people to form an opinion regarding development; and finally, we contribute in the political debates through other NGOs.

Each year, young people are sent on immersion programmes in local partner organisations. This programme for young volunteers prepares them for future professional engagements. These trips are an opportunity to gain knowledge which in turn helps them form an educated opinion on the history and nature of the North-South relationship. The exchange and training are, for the youths, a step towards broadening their horizons.

Volens stimulates and supports the 4th pillar. The activities of volunteers in member solidarity groups and enthusiastic social entrepreneurs allow us to support various local organisations and projects in the south. This gives us the opportunity to build a local partnership between “here and there” which can only benefit the actors. The people of the South have fixed objectives; solidarity groups give them the means to fulfil those goals and guide them in the right direction. In the Volens network we value the quality of interaction and most importantly, we learn from one another.
